In July 2026, Nias Nyalada Art Studio had the opportunity to develop a series of murals for the Wezesha Binti programme by Enabel Tanzania at the SIDO Innovation & Incubation Hub in Kigoma.

The project was more than a wall-painting assignment. Our goal was to create a visual language that could communicate the programme’s wider purpose: supporting girls and young women as they develop ideas, build skills, use technology, create businesses and participate in a greener and more inclusive economy.

The Concept: Seed to Ecosystem

The central idea behind the murals was “Seed to Ecosystem.”

A seed represented the beginning of an idea, a skill or an opportunity. As the visual story moved through the different spaces of the hub, that seed gradually developed through collaboration, technology, mentorship, entrepreneurship and sustainable production.

By the end of the journey, the individual idea had become part of a wider ecosystem.

This allowed the murals in each room to have their own story while still feeling like parts of one continuous narrative.

Making the Story Feel Like Kigoma

It was important that the artwork did not feel generic.

We incorporated visual references connected to Kigoma, including the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika, the surrounding landscape, oil-palm forms and references to the Central Line railway.

These elements were integrated subtly into the compositions rather than treated as separate illustrations.

The colour palette followed the same principle. Ivory backgrounds created openness and breathing space, while deep teal, green, muted ochre and restrained orange introduced energy without overwhelming the rooms.

A Journey Through the Hub

Each space represents a different stage of growth.

In the Reception Area, the story begins with possibility. The visual language introduces the seed, the landscape and the idea of entering a new journey. A girl welcoming witha warm smile

The Co-Creation Space focuses on collaboration. Young women and men appear working together, exchanging ideas and developing prototypes. The emphasis is on participation, inclusion and the understanding that strong ideas rarely grow in isolation. A girl welcoming witha warm smile

In the ICT Space, the murals explore how technology connects different parts of the economy. Digital tools, mobile payments, data, artificial intelligence and logistics become part of a wider system connecting producers, businesses and customers. A girl welcoming witha warm smile

The Shared Office shifts toward mentorship and professional growth. Entrepreneurs, technical experts and advisors share knowledge and review ideas together, highlighting the importance of networks and guidance in building sustainable businesses.

In the Start-Up Space, ideas begin becoming real products and enterprises. Sustainable solutions, including clean-energy concepts, represent the transition from experimentation to practical impact. A girl welcoming witha warm smile

Finally, the Value Chain Space explores the circular economy. Inspired partly by Kigoma’s oil-palm sector, the mural illustrates how materials, by-products and waste can move through a cycle in which resources are reused and transformed into new value. A girl welcoming witha warm smile

Designing One Continuous Visual Language

One of the main challenges was ensuring that the murals did not feel like separate posters placed around a building.

Instead, we developed a continuous hand-painted visual language using flowing lines, generous negative space and simplified human figures.

Elements transition from one idea into another: a seed becomes a ripple, a shoreline becomes a route, a route becomes a network, and a network gradually develops into an ecosystem.

This continuity reflects the project itself. Education, creativity, digital skills, entrepreneurship and sustainability are not isolated activities. They strengthen one another.

Art as Part of the Environment

Public and institutional artwork can do more than decorate a space.

For this project, we wanted the murals to become part of how people experience the hub—to encourage curiosity, communicate possibility and remind the young people using the space that innovation can begin with something very small.

A seed.

An idea.

A conversation.

A skill.

With the right environment, each of these can grow into something much larger.

For Nias Nyalada Art Studio, the Wezesha Binti mural project was an opportunity to combine storytelling, contemporary East African visual language and site-specific design to create artwork that belongs not only on the walls, but within the purpose of the space itself.
