In 1900, Michelin published a small red book. Not to sell art, not to win awards. They made tires, and they had a very simple problem: not enough people were driving. So they printed a guide. Where to stop, where to eat, where to sleep. They made the journey feel possible, and the rest followed.

I think about that a lot when I think about art in Dar es Salaam.

The gap in our city isn't talent. Walk through any serious studio, follow the right people online, and you'll see work that holds its own anywhere in the world. The gap isn't even interesting. When people come through our doors for a paint-and-sip session, something unlocks. They didn't know they wanted this until they were in it.

The gap is the feeling you get before you walk through the door. That quiet uncertainty: is this for me? What do I even look for? What does a fair price look like? What if I don't know anything?

Most people who would genuinely love owning original art have simply never been given a reason to try.

That's what I want to change.

The first time is the whole thing

There's a version of the art world that wants to stay mysterious. Where prices aren't listed, where you're supposed to already know the language, where the implicit message is: if you have to ask, you're probably not the audience.

I've never been interested in that version.

When someone buys their first original painting, something shifts. They start noticing art in hotels, in restaurants, on walls they've walked past a hundred times. They develop an eye. They come back. They tell people. You don't just make a sale when you help someone have a good first experience with art. You make an art person.

That's worth far more than a transaction.

What "First Art" means to us

We're building something around this idea. Not a product, exactly. More of a commitment. That your first experience with original art, whether that's buying a piece, commissioning something, or just picking up a brush for the first time in a session, should feel considered. Safe. Like someone thought about you before you arrived.

Practically, that means a few things:

It means being honest about how art is priced and why. It means explaining what a commission process actually looks like, step by step, without assuming you've done it before. It means creating price points that say "this is where you start" rather than making entry feel like a compromise. And it means the piece you take home, however you come to it, should come with a story. Who made it, how, and why it's yours.

The Michelin guide didn't make people love food. It made the journey feel worth taking. That's the only thing we're trying to do.

This city is ready

Dar es Salaam has a particular energy right now. There's a generation of people here who are done waiting for permission to take their own culture seriously. Who want their homes to reflect where they're actually from. Who are looking for something that isn't a print from a chain store or a generic canvas from a furniture shop.

They want real work. They just need someone to make the first step feel obvious.
